Laikipia Plateau Vacations and Safaris

Laikipia Plateau is only now gaining reputation as a wildlife destination with its wildlife densities being second only to those found in the Masai Mara Reserve. Laikipia is also home to a number of endangered species including  black rhino, Jackson's Hartebeest, Grevy's Zebra, wild dog and sitatunga!

Laikipia starts in the foothills of Mt Kenya and covers the region to the wall of the Rift Valley at Lake Baringo and extends over an area the size of Wales. This land is principally divided into various private ranches and small farms which, over the years have been converted to the conservation of wildlife in the region and developed into some of the leading community run and conservation orientated lodges and camps on the African continent. One of the best examples of this is in fact the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy which was initially a cattle ranch and is now a trust that concentrates primarily on conservation in tourism.

The main appeal of Laikipia when compared alongside other wildlife parks such as the Masai Mara and Amboseli, is that it is not a major park and therefore you can escape the large numbers of tourists that regularly frequent somewhere such as the Masai Mara and enjoy the wilderness. You do however pay for this exclusivity with expensive lodges but the activities are more wide ranging including horse riding, camel riding, walking safaris and game drives.
